What does conflict of interest mean?
Conflicts of interest occur in certain circumstances, such as when a psychologist has a multiple relationship with a client (e.g. the psychologist attends the same sporting club as their client) and/or when clients have, or have had, a relationship with each other (e.g. family members) and they both want to individually see the same psychologist. Other circumstances may apply to when a conflict of interest is likely to occur in the future.
A conflict of interest may impair a psychologist’s ability to remain ethical and impartial in their provision of psychology services. Confidentiality laws in Australia are tightly regulated to maintain the safety and security of all clients and as such we may not be able to disclose any details about what a particular conflict of interest is, other than to state that there is a conflict of interest or potential conflict of interest.
